Countless surveys indicate that most consumers don’t handle financial matters effectively, and that a major contributing factor is a lack of knowledge. It’s no surprise. Most of the educational material available is being created by broker/dealers who benefit from keeping the markets a mystery and tends to be overly focused on investments. The perceived complexity of the issues and the conflicting signals being sent by much of the financial services community leaves many people confused about how to take charge of their financial future.
For more than 20 years, the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) has focused on promoting the public interest and the benefits of comprehensive financial planning. We want consumers to recognize that as intimidating as it may be, portfolio performance is but one small piece of the process of gaining wealth. Most of the steps people should take don’t require a high level of financial knowledge. Our newest effort is the formation of the NAPFA Consumer Education Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit organization that will be an advocate for client-oriented financial services and a clearinghouse for objective consumer information.
The NAPFA Consumer Education Foundation will build upon the expertise of NAPFA’s more than 1,200 members and our high standing within the industry. Specifically, the Foundation will make grants to organizations that demonstrate the ability to educate consumers about basic personal financial issues.
The Foundation will partner with recognized educational organizations to expand the breadth, depth, and distribution of consumer financial education programming, including materials developed by NAPFA.
Education is empowering and is essential to help individuals build a secure financial future. Focusing on the fundamentals is key for consumers and it will strengthen our broader society, too.
